Ghana: GWL Deploys 200 Service Personnel to Recover GH¢866m Debt, Boost Digital Payments

Ghana Water Limited has launched an initiative deploying 200 service personnel to recover GH¢866 million in debts and promote digital payment systems.

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has initiated a Field Debt Recovery and Digital Payment Sensitisation programme aimed at recouping outstanding arrears from customers and enhancing the adoption of electronic payment methods throughout the country. This effort comes in response to a significant debt amounting to GH¢866 million, of which GH¢551 million, or 63%, is concentrated in the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area, indicating urgent financial challenges faced by the water company.

The initiative was officially announced in Accra, where GWL's Managing Director, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, highlighted the necessity of this intervention due to the escalating customer arrears. The deployment of 200 National Service Personnel, who have received specialized training, is part of GWL's broader strategy to improve revenue mobilization, diminish commercial losses, and enhance engagement with customers across its operational regions. This targeted approach aims to tackle the most significant debts first, particularly in growing urban areas.

By engaging trained service personnel, GWL hopes to not only recover delinquent payments but also educate customers on the benefits and processes involved in digital payments. This dual focus on recovery and education is expected to pave the way for a more sustainable financial future for the company, reduce the reliance on manual payment methods, and increase overall efficiency in revenue collection. The successful implementation of this initiative could provide a blueprint for other organizations facing similar financial difficulties and serve to promote wider adoption of digital payment systems in Ghana.
