Difficult driving conditions across Latvia; traffic jams forming
Difficult driving conditions are being reported throughout Latvia, particularly around Rīga where significant traffic jams are forming due to various issues.
On Friday evening, difficult driving conditions were reported across Latvia as indicated by the state-owned company Latvijas valsts ceļi (LVC). The data shows that on nearly all major, regional, and local roads, the driving conditions have worsened significantly. This has caused traffic complications and delays, particularly in urban areas.
In Rīga and its suburbs, the traffic application 'Waze' is showing substantial traffic jams in many places. Notably, drivers will need to spend more time on the roads when navigating through certain streets in downtown Rīga, including Eliezabetes, Avotu, Ģertrūdes, Lāčplēša, Stabu, and Aleksandra Čaka streets. Additionally, significant traffic congestion has been observed on the Vanšu and Akmens bridges and various other locations throughout the city.
Compounding the situation, accidents have been reported on the Rīga bypass (A5) between Salaspils and Babīte, leading to slowed traffic. By Friday, there were a total of 160 traffic accidents recorded from 6 AM to 4 PM across Latvia, which is higher than the average number for a regular workday. There are also expectations of heavy storms in Latvia on Friday night into Saturday, which may further exacerbate the already challenging driving conditions.
