Dredges used in illegal mining are destroyed and illegal wood seized during inspections in AM

The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) has destroyed dredges used for illegal mining and seized illegal wood in actions aimed at combating environmental crimes in the Amazon.

On Saturday, Ibama teams destroyed six dredges used in illegal mining along the Madeira River during enforcement operations in the Amazon. In a separate initiative on the same day, the agency also seized illegal timber found within Indigenous territories. These actions are part of Ibama's ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities that severely impact the environment, particularly through river contamination and biodiversity loss.

According to Ibama, the dredges targeted were abandoned and were rendered unusable in accordance with environmental regulations. The operations received support from the Brazilian Navy, which ensured the safety of the field teams. Additionally, aircraft were employed to identify and monitor the criminal structures operating along the river, highlighting the agency's commitment to tackling environmental crime comprehensively.

The destruction of these dredges and the seizure of illegal wood underscore the ongoing struggle against illegal mining and deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, which poses not only a threat to the local ecology but also to Indigenous communities that rely on these resources. Such measures are crucial in maintaining the delicate balance of this vital ecosystem while preserving the rights and territories of Indigenous peoples.
