Former member of the Šiauliai council D. Martinkienė acquitted in the 'checks' case
D. Martinkienė, a former member of the Šiauliai City Council, has been acquitted of criminal liability in a case involving financial misconduct.
D. Martinkienė, who served on the Šiauliai City Council from 2019 to 2023, has been acquitted of charges related to her misuse of municipal funds. The Special Investigation Service conducted an investigation where it was revealed that she falsified reports concerning expenses related to fuel and vehicle repairs. As a result, she fraudulently obtained €9,075 intended for council members' operational costs.
The prosecutor's announcement stated that D. Martinkienė's acquittal was based on her previously clean criminal record, her admission of guilt, sincere remorse, and her compensation of monetary damages to the city council. The judge overseeing the pre-trial investigation decided to absolve her of criminal charges based on these factors, which reflects a common practice in many legal systems where cooperation and restitution can lead to leniency.
Although acquitted from criminal liability, the court also imposed a non-criminal penalty, which restricts her from standing for election or being appointed to public office. This aspect signifies that while she is not facing criminal charges, there are still repercussions for her actions that may affect her future in public service, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny regarding accountability among public officials.
