In the 'Chekiukai' case, Neringa politician remains convicted
The Lithuanian Court of Appeals confirmed the conviction of Neringa politician S. Berletaitė for fraudulent activities regarding municipal funds.
The Lithuanian Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of S. Berletaitė, a politician from Neringa, finding that the lower court had correctly assessed the evidence against her. Over a period of more than three years, she engaged in conscious and repeated actions that violated the Local Self-Government Law and the regulations of the Neringa municipality council by fraudulently acquiring nearly 3,000 euros from the municipal administration under the pretense of covering councilor-related expenses. During the years 2019 to 2022, Berletaitė was found to have falsified 29 invoices related to councilor expenses, unjustly including costs incurred by other individuals and paid using different credit cards. By submitting these reports along with receipts to the municipal administration, she illicitly obtained payments amounting to 2,939.30 euros, resulting in not only financial harm to the municipality but also significant non-material damages to both the state and the municipality. The Lithuanian appellate court emphasized the seriousness of her actions and noted that the previous judiciary evaluations were adequate. The ruling reflects a stringent stance against political corruption in Lithuania, underlining the necessity for accountability among public officials. This case not only impacts the individual involved but also aims to restore public confidence in the governance and financial management of local authorities.
