The Supreme Court did not accept the prosecutor's appeal regarding the acquitted council member in the 'checks' case

The Supreme Court of Lithuania rejected an appeal from the Kaunas district prosecutor seeking to overturn an acquittal of council member V. Pituškienė in a corruption and fraud case.

The Supreme Court of Lithuania declined to hear an appeal from the prosecutor of the Kaunas district regarding the acquittal of council member V. Pituškienė. The prosecutor, Vitoldas Guliavičius, sought to overturn the previous rulings of the Lithuanian Court of Appeals and the Kaunas District Court, which had initially found Pituškienė not guilty of charges related to document forgery, abuse of power, and fraud. He argued in his appeal that the courts improperly interpreted and applied the law and failed to assess the evidence adequately.

In his request, Guliavičius aimed to have Pituškienė convicted on all counts, proposing a total penalty of €12,500 and requesting that she be barred from holding certain public office roles for a period of four years. Additionally, he sought restitution for the Marijampolės municipality amounting to €1,184 due to the alleged fraudulent activities. The prosecutor's claims center on the belief that the judicial system's handling of the evidence was flawed, suggesting that proper legal processes were not adhered to during the initial trials.

The case reflects broader issues of corruption and accountability within local governance, raising concerns about the integrity of elected officials in Lithuania. As political figures in power, council members like Pituškienė are under scrutiny, and this case highlights the challenges in the legal proceedings connected to corruption cases, further complicating the relationship between governmental integrity and public trust.
