Long-time LMTA lecturer, flutist Algirdas Vizgirda has died

The Lithuanian music community mourns the loss of flutist Algirdas Vizgirda, a prominent lecturer at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Algirdas Vizgirda, a respected figure in the Lithuanian music scene, passed away, as announced by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA) community on Facebook. He was born in 1944 in Vilnius and dedicated his life to music, completing his studies at the Lithuanian Conservatory in 1968, followed by postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory eight years later. He also undertook further studies at the Paris National Conservatory, showcasing his commitment to musical excellence.

Throughout his career, Vizgirda made significant contributions as a performer and educator. He founded the ensemble "Musica humana" and served as its long-time artistic director, while also being a member of the international ensemble "Baltic trio." Additionally, he played a key role in establishing the "Kuršių nerija" festival, enhancing the cultural landscape of Lithuania. His influence extended to education, having taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre since 1971, shaping the next generation of musicians.

In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Algirdas Vizgirda was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Gediminas, along with various prestigious awards from the Government of Lithuania and the National Prize for Culture. His passing is a significant loss to the Lithuanian and wider Baltic music communities, where his legacy will likely continue to inspire future musicians and artists.
