In Nantes, the introduction of LAPI (automated license plate recognition) vehicles has transformed the city's approach to traffic enforcement since their deployment in September 2024. These white vehicles, equipped with multiple cameras, have been responsible for issuing a staggering 310,000 parking fines in 2025 alone, leading to revenue of approximately 9 million euros for the city. This change has replaced the previous model of enforcement that relied on 42 public space surveillance agents, illustrating a shift towards technology-driven solutions in urban management.
The expansion of paid parking zones alongside increased parking fees has been a significant factor in this revenue surge. In 2023, the old enforcement system generated only 2.5 million euros in fines, showcasing the efficiency of the LAPI system in comparison. Residents have mixed feelings about these vehicles, often referring to them with disdain as
