"There is such wealth there!" The archives of the Chicago Latvian radio broadcasts have arrived at the LNB
Chicago Latvian radio archives have been transferred to the Latvian National Library, marking the end of weekly broadcasts after 73 years.
The interview at the Latvian National Library coincided with the visit of Silvija Kļaviņa-Baršnija, the host of the Chicago Latvian radio programs. This notable event took place on February 10 at the Gaismas Pilī, with an atmosphere filled with warmth as attendees included Marika Selga, director of the Special Collections Department of the library, and Zane Grosa, manager of the Audiovisual Collection at the Arts and Music Center. This gathering celebrated not only the rich heritage of the Chicago Latvian broadcasts but also the significance of preserving these historical recordings.
The transfer of the archives marks the conclusion of the weekly Chicago Latvian radio broadcasts that had aired for 73 years. Reported last year by LSM correspondent Ina Strazdiņa in the USA, the moment was significant as all the archives, encompassing audio recordings in multiple formats, were loaded into a vehicle destined for Latvia. This transition reflects an important chapter in the history of the Latvian diaspora and emphasizes the importance of documenting and preserving their cultural contributions back in Latvia.
Kļaviņa-Baršnija shared her thoughts about the decision to donate the extensive collection to the Gaismas Pilī, noting the challenges posed by the vastness of the collection and the need for suitable spaces for other organizations as well. Her comments highlight the collaborative effort required in preserving cultural heritage, and affirm the significance of the archives as a valuable resource for future generations to understand and appreciate the rich legacy of the Latvian community abroad. This initiative underlines the continuing connection between the Latvian diaspora and their homeland, fostering a renewed interest in cultural heritage and historical documentation.
