Attica Group: Adds Serifos to the Piraeus - Heraklion Line
The Attica Group is requesting to add the island of Serifos as a stop on the Piraeus - Heraklion ferry route, enhancing connectivity and tourism potential.
The Attica Group has submitted a request to include the island of Serifos as an intermediate stop on the ferry route connecting Piraeus and Heraklion, Crete. If approved, this addition will enable alternating nightly ferry services operated by 'Asterion II' and 'Nisos Rhodes', thereby providing daily maritime connections to Serifos, even during the winter months. This move is expected to bolster the island's tourism potential during the summer season as well.
Adding Serifos as a stop will not only improve accessibility but will also have economic implications for the Attica Group. By including an additional destination on this route, the company can effectively reduce its obligations under the European Union's Emissions Trading System, which is designed to impose costs on ferry services operating in island regions with populations exceeding 200,000. In Greece, only Crete fits this population criterion, meaning the addition of Serifos will enable the Attica Group to operate while mitigating these costs.
Furthermore, the Attica Group, which encompasses various ferry companies such as Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, ANEK Lines, and Superfast Ferries, is currently in the process of modernizing its fleet towards greener alternatives. This strategy aligns with broader European initiatives to enhance the sustainability of maritime transportation, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility while also catering to increased tourism demands during peak seasons.
