Cold weather warning across Finland

A cold weather warning has been issued for all of Finland, indicating severe frost conditions, particularly affecting those working outdoors.

According to preliminary forecasts from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland is facing severe cold weather during the upcoming winter school holiday weeks. As of today, Friday, cold weather warnings are issued across the country, with additional warnings expected on Saturday for most regions except Northern Ostrobothnia and southern Lapland. The situation remains critical through Sunday, particularly for Southern, Central, and Eastern Finland, where the cold is expected to persist.

The coldest conditions are being recorded in Lapland, with temperatures dropping to -33.1 degrees Celsius in Utsjoki and -32.8 in Kittilรค. Even regions farther south, like Virrat, are experiencing severe cold, with temperatures hitting -30 degrees. This situation may surprise those in the southern areas where temperatures are around -10 degrees; however, the cold central and northern regions are facing extreme conditions.

Yle's meteorologist Anniina Valtonen emphasized that the warnings, particularly for southern Finland, are based on wind chill advice. Although temperatures might seem manageable at -10 degrees, winds can significantly increase the perceived cold, especially when coming from the sea. The warnings primarily target individuals who will be working outdoors during these conditions, highlighting the seriousness of the weather challenges posed by the wind and low temperatures.
