The weather is turning icy again - warnings for the whole country

Finland is facing extremely cold temperatures over the weekend, with warnings issued nationwide for freezing conditions.

As Finland prepares for a chilly weekend, the Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued warnings of severe cold temperatures across the country. The forecasts predict nighttime and morning temperatures dropping significantly, with projections of up to -35 degrees Celsius in Lapland. The meteorologist, Antti Jylhä-Ollila, mentioned that from Thursday midnight through to Sunday morning, the country will experience icy weather conditions especially pronounced during the night hours.

Temperatures are expected to plummet, with southern Finland seeing temperatures between -22 to -25 degrees Celsius, central Finland around -30 degrees, and the northern parts, specifically Lapland, possibly reaching -35 degrees Celsius. During the day on Friday and Saturday, temperatures will only slightly recover, with southern regions perhaps seeing around -10 to -15 degrees, while central and northern areas remain severely cold. Jylhä-Ollila noted that even though temperatures drop markedly at night, daytime sunshine slightly alleviates these freezing conditions as the season progresses.

In addition to the frigid temperatures, the weather will see some north-easterly winds contributing to the overall chill in Southern and Eastern Finland, although these winds are forecasted to be light. Residents are being advised to take necessary precautions in response to the impending cold snap, as these temperatures pose risks especially for those outdoors or without adequate heating. The Meteorological Institute continues to monitor the situation and provide updates for the public regarding emerging weather conditions.
