Snow in most parts of the country; visibility worsens for drivers

On Friday morning, increased winds and snowfall began affecting most parts of Latvia as reported by meteorological information. Visibility during snowstorms has dropped to between 500-800 meters in some areas of Southern Kurzeme and Zemgale, leading to deteriorating driving conditions. The winds from the east-northeast are gusting at speeds of 7-12 meters per second, reaching up to 14 meters per second in Kolka. Good to moderate air quality has been recorded in the region, but the winter conditions pose challenges for transportation.
As of 5 AM, temperatures across the country range from -4.6 degrees Celsius in Daugavpils to -11 degrees Celsius in Rūjiena. Snow depth measurements taken at observation stations reported varying amounts, with 6-8 centimeters recorded in Kolka, Mērsrags, Daugavgrīva, Ainaži, and Rūjiena, while others reported much higher, such as 44 centimeters in Daugavpils, 49 centimeters in Piedruja, and 53 centimeters in Dagda. In the capital city of Riga, snowfall is ongoing with a northeast wind blowing at 5 meters per second and a temperature of -8 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature recorded on Thursday ranged from +0.8 degrees Celsius in Daugavpils to -7.5 degrees Celsius in Alūksne, indicating challenging winter weather across Latvia. Such conditions are typical for this time of year and emphasize the need for caution among drivers and those traveling on foot in affected areas. Authorities are likely to advise residents to monitor weather updates and consider alternate travel arrangements if necessary to ensure safety during this winter period.
