Snowfall in most of Latvia; drivers need to be cautious

Visibility has significantly reduced in areas like South Kurzeme and Zemgale, dropping to 500-800 meters due to snowstorms, which is raising concerns about driving conditions. Strong gusts of wind from the east and northeast are recorded, reaching speeds of 7-12 meters per second, with Kolka witnessing winds at 14 meters per second. The air quality remains fair to moderate during this weather event.
Temperatures across Latvia at 5 AM ranged from -4.6 degrees Celsius in Daugavpils to -11 degrees Celsius in Rūjiena, indicating a consistent cold spell affecting the country. Snow depth varies significantly across the observations, from 6-8 centimeters in places like Kolka and Mērsrags to much deeper snow up to 53 centimeters recorded in Dagda. In the capital city, Rīga, snowfall is ongoing with a northeast wind blowing at 5 meters per second and temperatures settling around -8 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature on Thursday recorded by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre varied from +0.8 degrees in Daugavpils to -7.5 degrees in Alūksne, demonstrating the fluctuation in weather conditions across different regions. As the snow continues to fall, authorities are advising the public to remain vigilant on the roads and prepare for potentially challenging travel conditions.
