Friday the 13th with Double Hoy No Circula: Which cars cannot drive tomorrow in CDMX and Edomex?

Mexico City has activated environmental contingency measures due to poor air quality, restricting certain vehicles from circulating.

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) has declared Phase 1 of an environmental contingency due to the alarming deterioration in air quality, with an hourly ozone concentration reaching 155 ppb reported at the Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera monitoring station in Coyoacán, Mexico City. In response to these conditions, a 'Doble Hoy No Circula' program has been initiated, which imposes restrictions on the circulation of certain vehicles in the metropolitan area to mitigate air pollution.

Under this program, vehicles with specific verification holograms will be prohibited from traveling on February 13th from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. This includes those with verification sticker 2, as well as vehicles with sticker 1 whose license plate ends with the digits 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 0. Moreover, vehicles bearing holograms 0 and 00 with blue stickers that end with the last digits 9 or 0 will also be restricted. The regulation aims at reducing the number of cars on the road amid worsening air quality, which poses health risks to residents.

The implementation of such a contingency plan highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Mexico City in managing air pollution amidst urban growth and vehicular emissions. Authorities urge residents to comply with the restrictions to protect public health, especially during these adverse conditions, where pollutants can lead to increased respiratory issues among the population. As the city continues to develop, proactive measures like these will be crucial to ensuring a healthier urban environment for residents, while also balancing economic activity during restricted days.
