Global condom purchases fall by 30% and promotion campaigns are reduced by half, warn organizations

Global condom purchases have decreased by 30%, while promotional campaigns for their use have been cut in half, according to civil organizations on International Condom Day.

On the occasion of International Condom Day, celebrated on February 13, civil organizations have raised alarms regarding a significant global regression in the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. They note that between 2016 and 2022, international condom purchases dropped nearly 30% compared to the period from 2010 to 2016. This decline, as reported in the Global AIDS Update 2025 by UNAIDS, has coincided with a nearly 50% reduction in initiatives aimed at promoting condom use in low- and middle-income countries since 2010.

The organizations emphasize that the decreased availability of condoms and a lack of preventive education in key communities are serious concerns stemming from diminished government purchases. Many governments are cutting back on buying condoms for free distribution due to budget restrictions and political decisions. Furthermore, this situation is compounded by recent cuts to funding, which has further strained resources for condom distribution and sexual health promotion.

Overall, the report highlights the urgent need for a renewed commitment to condom distribution and sexual health education, especially in vulnerable communities. Stakeholders are urged to address these alarming trends to prevent a resurgence of STIs and to safeguard public health.
