Public Defender opens registration for free Community Wedding in Belém; see how to participate

The Public Defender's Office of Pará is inviting couples to register for its 8th Community Wedding in Belém, scheduled for May, which is aimed at supporting vulnerable couples.

The Public Defender's Office of the State of Pará (DPE-PA) has announced the registration period for its 8th Community Wedding event, which will take place in May in conjunction with the National Public Defender Day celebrations. This initiative is designed for heterosexual and same-sex couples facing social and economic vulnerabilities, providing an opportunity for them to formalize their unions at no cost. It aims to make legal recognition of partnerships more accessible, especially for those who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

Interested couples are required to visit the Núcleo de Atendimento Referencial (NARE) of the Public Defender's Office, located in the Campina neighborhood of Belém, between February 23 and March 6, during specified hours. Each couple must bring along two adult witnesses and the necessary documentation for the registration process. This proactive measure by the public institution underscores its commitment to assisting those in need by facilitating legal union formalities.

As a significant aspect of this community event, it is noted that starting in 2026, the wedding services will exclusively cater to couples residing within Belém, enhancing the focus on local residents. Legal recognition through marriage grants couples various rights such as adoption, inheritance, pension benefits, and inclusion in health plans, thus addressing several socio-economic factors that affect vulnerable populations. The initiative not only celebrates love and partnership but also emphasizes the rights and protections that come with formalizing these relationships within the community.
