Leader of the protest that attacked buses in downtown SP arrested in flagrante

One of the leaders behind a protest that vandalized municipal buses in São Paulo was arrested during the event.

On Thursday, November 12, a significant protest erupting in downtown São Paulo turned destructive as demonstrators vandalized municipal buses. Authorities apprehended one of the key leaders of the protest, Antônio Agripino da Silva, known as Preguinho, who was caught on video deflating the tires of buses at Terminal Parque Dom Pedro 2º. Given the rampant destruction, the Municipal Guard (GCM) quickly intervened and took him into custody. Preguinho faces serious charges, including attacks on transportation security, theft, and criminal association, confirmed by the city’s Secretary of Urban Security, Orlando Morando.

The protest was reportedly connected to the electoral process for the city's bus drivers' union, with Preguinho running as a candidate for the opposition. This context suggests that the vandalism may have been a form of political expression against the current union leadership ahead of the elections scheduled for March 10 and 11. The situation is further complicated by videos circulating on social media, depicting Preguinho and other members of the opposition rallying support for their cause, indicating a potential escalation in tensions within the union membership due to the impending elections.

This incident highlights not only the immediate public order implications but also the broader socio-political dynamics at play. The combination of civic activism and violent expression can reflect underlying dissatisfaction among the workers regarding their representation within the union, suggesting that without addressing these grievances, further unrest may occur. As the elections approach, the city will need to monitor the situation closely to avoid additional escalations.
