Health CPI of the Chamber of Sorocaba closes without hearing the accused; case evolves into corruption scandals of the city hall
The Health CPI in Sorocaba closed without hearing from the accused, despite ongoing protests from the opposition regarding the investigation into corruption.
The Health CPI (Parliamentary Inquiry Commission) in Sorocaba, São Paulo, concluded its work without hearing from any of the accused parties involved in the alleged corruption scandals related to the city’s health sector. The announcement of the closure was made by the rapporteur, Cristiana Passos (of the Republicans), during a reading of the final report on Thursday, September 12. This has raised concerns among opposition members who believe that the lack of testimonies and in-depth investigations undermines the credibility and effectiveness of the inquiry. Despite this, the final report will be sent to the São Paulo State Public Ministry for further actions.
The Health CPI was established in December 2025 in response to significant public pressure following revelations of potential corruption in the administration of the former mayor, Rodrigo Manga. His administration faced scrutiny due to a federal investigation centered around suspected corrupt practices within the Sorocaba city government. The circumstances led to Manga's suspension from office, heightening the community's demand for accountability and transparency. The inquiry aimed to shed light on these matters and hold responsible parties accountable.
However, the abrupt closure of the CPI without interviewing key figures from the administration has left many, particularly in the opposition, disillusioned. Critics argue that this lack of testimony could dilute the impact of the findings and reduce public trust in the local government’s willingness to confront corruption. The forwarding of the report to the Public Ministry suggests that while the legislative inquiry may have dissolved, the concerns about corruption in Sorocaba’s health services will continue to be pursued through judicial channels, emphasizing the ongoing struggle against corruption at local governmental levels.
