Celebrations last for three months! The National Symphony Orchestra announces its centenary program
The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its centenary with a series of concerts starting in August and culminating in October, while also deliberating on the appointment of a new chief conductor.
The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), established on September 5, 1926, is embarking on a three-month celebration of its centenary, beginning with a concert led by Termo Peltokoski featuring 'Lohengrin' in early August. This celebration includes a series of concerts throughout August, including a tour in France, and will conclude on October 25 with a performance conducted by maestro Karel Marka Shišons and featuring vocalist Elīna Garanča, marking a significant milestone in the orchestra's history.
A critical aspect of current discourse within the LNSO and among music enthusiasts revolves around the search for their next chief conductor. Director Indra Lūkina acknowledged that discussions about potential candidates are underway during meetings with concertmasters. This season, the orchestra has introduced several new conductors, garnering positive feedback from both the audience and musicians, indicating a growing interest in their performances.
The orchestra aims to finalize their decision on a new chief conductor by the end of the season, as they anticipate that discussions and evaluations of the candidates will crystallize into a clear choice. This organizational transition is crucial for the future direction of the orchestra and reflects the evolving landscape of classical music in Latvia.
