Brazilian wins award in Germany for AI research in diagnosing mental disorders

Francisco Rodrigues from the University of São Paulo has been awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize in Germany for his AI-based research in diagnosing mental disorders.

Francisco Rodrigues, a researcher from the University of São Paulo (USP), has been recognized with the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his innovative work in using artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose mental disorders. His studies suggest that AI methods can reliably detect conditions such as epilepsy, autism, and schizophrenia with over 90% accuracy. This recognition places him among the top 20 scientists honored for their contributions to their fields.

The research conducted by Rodrigues involved utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create data sets that trained an algorithm capable of identifying specific mental health conditions. The findings developed in this research were significant enough to be published in well-respected scientific journals, including Nature and PLOS One. This breakthrough emphasizes not only the potential for AI technology in the medical field but also highlights important regional contributions to global scientific discourse in mental health.

Although the techniques are still in the early stages of development, they show great promise in assisting psychologists and psychiatrists in making more accurate diagnoses. Rodrigues explains that the research has successfully identified altered brain regions in individuals with various mental health disorders, providing insights into how these alterations correlate with specific conditions. The advancement of such AI methodologies has the potential to revolutionize diagnostic practices in mental health by increasing accessibility and reliability of diagnoses.
