Two men were shot dead in Rio de Janeiro after they attempted to rob an off-duty police officer.
On the morning of Thursday, October 12, two men were killed in an attempted robbery against an off-duty police officer on Avenida Brasil, near Penha, located in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Military Police, the officer was approached by criminals while on a side road heading towards the city center. The officer reacted to the attack, leading to an exchange of gunfire where both suspects were shot and subsequently died at the scene. The authorities recovered a revolver and a replica firearm from the deceased suspects. Following the incident, the area was cordoned off for forensic investigation as the Delegacia de Homicídios da Capital (DHC) is set to examine the circumstances of the confrontation. This investigation will determine the specifics of the robbery attempt and the police officer's actions during the incident. Due to the police operation following the event, one lane on the side road was closed near the 15th pedestrian bridge, causing significant traffic delays as both CET-Rio and Military Police teams managed the scene. The event underscores the ongoing violence in Rio de Janeiro and the risks faced by law enforcement, even during off-duty hours, as they encounter threats in their communities.
