Sheep and goat pox has significantly impacted over 2,500 farms in Greece, resulting in nearly 477,000 animal deaths as reported by the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

According to a recent announcement from the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food, along with the National Scientific Committee for the Management and Control of Sheep and Goat Pox, the disease has led to the culling of approximately 476,839 animals across the nation. A total of 2,595 farms have been affected, with confirmed cases numbering 2,094. These figures highlight the severity of the outbreak and its implications for livestock owners and the agricultural sector in Greece.

In the latest update regarding the disease's progression in Greece, it was reported that from February 1 to 8, 2026, there were 10 new cases identified across seven Regional Units, including Aitoloakarnania, Evia, Ilia, Kavala, Karditsa, Magnesia & Sporades, and Pieria. The ongoing updates on the outbreak are based on the submission of final data from these Regional Units, emphasizing the importance of accurate and timely information for producers and the public to manage the situation effectively.

The Ministry of Rural Development emphasizes that adherence to biosecurity measures is crucial for controlling the spread of the disease. Continuous monitoring and the updating of data are necessary to inform stakeholders and minimize the impact on the agricultural community, which relies heavily on sheep and goat farming as part of Greece's economy and cultural heritage.
