Maranhense fisherman missing in PA reportedly trapped in cabin during shipwreck, witnesses say
The Brazilian Navy is searching for a missing fisherman after a fishing vessel sank off the coast of Pará, with witnesses claiming he was trapped in the cabin during the incident.
The Brazilian Navy has intensified its search for 39-year-old fisherman James Vinius Morais, who has been missing since the sinking of a fishing vessel near Salinópolis, Pará, on Sunday, the 8th. According to witnesses, Morais may have been trapped in the cabin of the boat when it sank approximately 126 km off the coast. The fiberglass vessel, registered in Raposa, Maranhão, and linked to the Maranhão Fishing Cooperative (Copama), had six crew members, five of whom were successfully rescued by other fishing boats in the area following the incident.
The fishing vessel capsized around 10 PM on Sunday, and volunteer search efforts have been underway since then, with multiple fishing boats actively searching the waters for Morais. Eyewitness accounts and available technology have indicated that Morais may still be submerged or unaccounted for. However, the efforts are hampered by deep waters and adverse sea conditions, which make finding the missing fisherman increasingly challenging.
Images captured from cell phones show at least 11 fishing boats conducting search operations at sea for the last two days. The public and local fishermen are mobilizing to assist with the search, indicating a strong community effort to locate Morais. As the search continues, authorities remain hopeful but aware of the difficulties posed by the ocean's depths and inclement weather on their rescue operations.
