Port of Igoumenitsa: Construction of 3 Onshore Power Supply positions for ships

A high-strategic project for Greece's energy transition in maritime transport begins with the installation of three Onshore Power Supply systems in Igoumenitsa port.

A significant project of high strategic importance for Greece and the energy transition in maritime transport is underway, focused on the study, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of three Onshore Power Supply systems for passenger and vehicle ferries at Igoumenitsa port. The project contract was signed by the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE) with the company Paralos Commercial S.A., marking a critical step towards the modernization and environmental upgrading of the country's port infrastructure.

This landmark initiative includes the construction, within the next 18 months, of two power positions of 3 MVA and one power position of 0.5 MVA for Onshore Power Supply at Igoumenitsa port. These new facilities will allow passenger/vehicle ferries to shut down their auxiliary engines while docked, directly powering their systems from the electrical distribution network. The completion of this project is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from moored ships, contributing to environmental sustainability in maritime transport.

In addition to improving air quality and reducing noise pollution, the project aligns with Greece's broader goals for energy transition and environmental responsibility. As maritime transport is a key component of the countryโ€™s economy, the development of more eco-friendly port operations is essential. With this initiative, Greece takes a decisive step towards greener ports, setting a precedent for future projects aiming at sustainability in the shipping industry.
