Police in Niger State have arrested a suspect in the killing of a vigilante member after he fled for two years following the crime.

The Niger State Police Command has successfully apprehended a key suspect, Sudais Zakari, in the murder of Ibrahim Yahaya, a vigilante member, after he remained at large for nearly two years. Zakari was arrested alongside another suspect, Danjuma Idris, during a police operation targeting criminal hideouts in Maitumbi. The duo is also linked to numerous robbery incidents reported in the area since Zakari's departure following the alleged murder.

The killing of Ibrahim Yahaya, known as Danladi Baushe, occurred in April 2024, which prompted extensive investigations and efforts to locate Zakari. After a protracted search, law enforcement officials managed to catch up with him, raising hopes for justice for Yahaya's family and the community affected by violent crimes. The arrest signifies a proactive stance by the Niger State Police in tackling crime and restoring public order, particularly amidst growing concerns over vigilante and mob justice in the region.

Following their arrests on February 7, 2026, the Niger State Police Command announced plans to charge Zakari and Idris in court pending the completion of investigations into their criminal activities. The police's actions are expected to resonate positively within the community, emphasizing the importance of law enforcement in combating crime and protecting citizens from violent offenders.
