Carrefour sells its subsidiary in Romania for 823 million euros
Carrefour has sold its Romanian subsidiary to Paval Holding for 823 million euros as part of a strategy to focus on its core markets in France, Spain, and Brazil.
Carrefour, the French retail giant, has announced the sale of its Romanian subsidiary to Paval Holding for a total enterprise value of 823 million euros. This sale is a significant part of Carrefour's strategy to refocus its operations towards its three main markets: France, Spain, and Brazil. The exclusive negotiations with Paval Holding, which is linked to Dedeman, Romania's leading DIY retailer, reflect Carrefour's ongoing effort to streamline its business amid a shifting retail landscape.
The Romanian subsidiary operates a network of 478 stores, including hypermarkets, supermarkets, proximity stores, and discount outlets. With an annual revenue of 3.2 billion euros, it accounts for approximately 3.5% of Carrefour's overall revenue. This divestment allows Carrefour to concentrate its resources and management efforts on its priority markets, enhancing its competitiveness in an increasingly globalized retail sector and addressing the challenges posed by e-commerce and local market preferences.
Alexandre Bompard, Carrefour's CEO since 2017, previously announced a strategic review to enhance the company's market position and adaptability. The decision to sell the Romanian operations is a clear indication of this strategy in action, as Carrefour aims to bolster its financial health and operational focus by divesting from non-core assets. This move not only demonstrates Carrefour's commitment to its strategic objectives but also positions it for future growth and stability in its chosen markets.
