Minister Choi Hwi-young: 'Pursuing a Global K-Pop Festival by the End of 2027'

The South Korean government is planning a large-scale K-pop festival by the end of 2027, involving all domestic entertainment agencies.

Choi Hwi-young, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, announced plans for a massive K-pop festival slated for late 2027 that will involve participation from all local entertainment agencies. During a press conference held at the All Art Theater in Seoul, he confirmed that discussions are underway within the Presidential Committee for Cultural Exchange regarding the festival's organization. The goal is to unite artists from every agency for this significant event, which aims to further promote the international spread of K-pop.

In addition to the festival, Minister Choi highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the infrastructure necessary for such large-scale events, citing a shortage of adequate concert facilities. He acknowledged the challenges posed by artists' packed schedules, but emphasized the committee's commitment to pooling the insights and experiences of all entertainment agencies to create a festival that captures global attention. Choi also mentioned the need for a large venue, such as a 50,000-seat dome, while being cautious about discussing specific sites due to upcoming local elections.

Furthermore, Choi provided an update on the preparations for BTS's comeback performance scheduled for November 21 in Gwanghwamun, celebrating the return of the iconic group. He expressed the significance of their first stage since their hiatus taking place in such a symbolic location and noted ongoing consultations with various agencies to ensure safety and traffic management for attendees. The Minister also addressed concerns about hotel pricing during major events, stating that intergovernmental strategies are being developed to tackle this issue as part of broader national tourism strategies.
