Warm weather nationwide during the Lunar New Year holiday... Heavy snow expected on the east coast the day before the holiday

Korea is forecasted to experience warm weather during the Lunar New Year holiday, with heavy snowfall expected along the east coast on the eve of the holiday.

During the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday period in Korea, the weather is expected to be warmer than usual, with national temperatures being similar to or higher than the average range of -6 to 2 degrees Celsius for lows and 5 to 11 degrees Celsius for highs. The Korea Meteorological Administration warns that on Monday, January 16, significant snow is predicted particularly in the eastern coastal regions of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang. Official Lee Kwang-yeon stated that while much of the nation will enjoy mild, mostly cloudy conditions, the east coast could see rain or snow during this period.

On the weekends leading into the holiday from January 14 to 15, a warm southwesterly wind is expected to raise temperatures by about 5 degrees Celsius above average across many regions. Temperatures during this time will vary from low highs of -4 to 7 degrees and daytime highs from 7 to 18 degrees Celsius. However, fog and potential road ice due to drizzle from the dense fog are anticipated in the west coastal and inland areas, with advisories issued for safe travel during peak holiday traffic and the need to check flight schedules due to possible weather disruptions.

In the latter part of the holiday from January 16 to 18, a high pressure system moving south from the north is expected to stabilize temperatures closer to the seasonal averages. Morning temperatures will range from -6 to 6 degrees and daytime highs between 3 to 11 degrees. Despite this, expect significant snowfall or rain on the east coast of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang due to incoming precipitation from the northeast as the high pressure system shifts.
