A Federal Court ordered the provisional suspension of the Kanasín landfill due to concerns it poses a risk to the aquifer supplying Mérida.
A recent ruling from a Federal Court has ordered the provisional closure of the Kanasín landfill, following concerns raised by local residents that it poses a direct threat to the aquifer supplying the Mérida metropolitan area. The operator of the landfill, Ciclo Ambiental, has stated that they will comply with the judicial resolution. The ruling came after residents filed a complaint citing multiple irregularities and a previous closure imposed by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) back in October 2025, yet the landfill continued its operations.
