Court suspends the construction of a landfill in Iranduba in the interior of Amazonas

The Amazonas Court has halted the construction of a landfill in Iranduba due to irregularities found in the environmental licensing process.

The Amazonas Court has ordered the immediate suspension of construction activities for a landfill in Iranduba, following a request from the State Public Ministry. This legal action uncovered suspicious irregularities concerning the environmental licensing granted to Norte Ambiental Tratamento de Resíduos Ltda., raising concerns over the legality of operations that could negatively impact the local environment.

The suspension was part of a broader legal initiative taken by the 1st and 2nd Public Prosecutor’s Offices in Iranduba, targeting not only the construction company but also the Amazonas Institute of Environmental Protection (Ipaam) and the Iranduba City Hall. The presiding judge, Felipe Nogueira Cadengue de Lucena, issued a preliminary injunction that prohibits any further construction, land grading, or deforestation associated with the proposed landfill.

In his ruling, the judge cited that Ipaam had granted the installation license (number 0099/2024-82) even after a previous directive had ordered its suspension. The absence of an environmental viability certificate from the Iranduba City Hall, which is required by the Environmental Council, exacerbates the situation, highlighting the need for strict adherence to environmental laws and regulations in the region.
