Edmonton church deacon accused of sexually assaulting a minor
A church deacon in Edmonton has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor, with police urging other potential victims to come forward.
Frezghi Zerezghi, a 48-year-old deacon at Vanguard Community Church in Edmonton, was arrested on December 12 and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference involving a minor. This case stands out due to the nature of the accusations as it involves a leader in the community, raising serious concerns about child safety within local religious institutions. According to the Edmonton Police Service, the alleged assault took place in November 2025, when Zerezghi was serving at the church, which operates in leased premises near 121 Avenue and 103 Street.
The charges of sexual interference indicate that the police believe actions were taken by Zerezghi towards someone under the age of consent, which in Canada is defined as under 16 years old. After his arrest, Zerezghi was released with conditions, although the police remain alarmed about the possibility of more victims. They have encouraged anyone with potential information or past experiences of victimization to step forward, highlighting the need for community vigilance and support for victims of abuse.
This incident not only sheds light on the alarming issues of sexual abuse within community organizations but also emphasizes the importance of addressing such accusations seriously. As investigations continue, the potential for more revelations regarding the church's leadership and the safety measures in place will be under scrutiny, reflecting broader societal concerns about the protection of minors in various social spheres, including religious settings.
