Ontario town priest charged in connection with historical sex assault of minor
A Coptic Church priest in Ontario has been charged with historical sexual assault against a minor after a victim came forward with allegations stemming from incidents in the late 1990s.
York Regional Police have charged a Coptic Church priest, Michelle Shafik, also known as Michael, in relation to historical sexual assaults on a minor that occurred between 1996 and 1999. The investigation was initiated in November 2025 after the victim, who was under 16 at the time of the incidents, reported being assaulted on two separate occasions. The charges against Shafik include sexual assault and sexual interference, and he was arrested on February 26. Law enforcement is concerned that there may be additional victims, prompting them to release Shafik's photo to encourage others to come forward.
The allegations against Shafik highlight ongoing concerns regarding sexual abuse within religious institutions, where trust is often placed in figures like priests. The fact that the victim reported the assaults nearly three decades after they occurred underscores the long-lasting psychological impact such crimes can have, often leading survivors to wait years to speak out. It also indicates a progressing societal shift where more victims feel empowered to come forward and seek justice.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been a victim of sexual assault to report their experiences, reinforcing the message that help and support are available. With the release of the priestβs image, the police hope to assist in identifying any additional victims who may have been affected by his actions during his tenure in the community. This case not only raises awareness about sexual assault but also calls attention to the need for accountability within religious organizations.
