Subsidence in pedestrian walkway of the Mocambinho Bridge requires interventions, says Crea

The Crea-PI has identified structural issues in the pedestrian walkway of the Mocambinho Bridge in Teresina, prompting recommended interventions after community complaints.

The Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of Piauí (CREA-PI) has raised concerns about the pedestrian walkway of the Leonel Brizola Bridge, popularly known as the Mocambinho Bridge, located in the northern region of Teresina. Following complaints from local residents regarding uneven surfaces designated for pedestrians and cyclists, a technical inspection was conducted on October 10, which confirmed significant subsidence and wear in the access embankment and the walkway itself. The inspection was initiated to address these community concerns and ensure safety for users of the bridge.

Despite the identified issues, engineers from the Commission of Bridges and Large Structures have assured that there is no imminent risk of collapse to the main structure of the bridge. They confirmed that the superstructure remains capable of supporting anticipated loads. The subsidence observed is attributed to the natural settling of the ground over time, reinforcing that while interventions will be necessary to address the pedestrian facilities, the overall integrity of the bridge's primary structure is intact.

This situation highlights the importance of ongoing infrastructure maintenance and the need for timely interventions to ensure public safety. Local authorities, alongside engineering experts, will need to develop a plan for immediate repairs to the pedestrian walkway and access areas to avoid potential hazards for the growing user base in the area. Such actions will also serve to reassure the community of their safety while utilizing this critical infrastructure in Teresina.
