Carnival 2026: Traffic scheme will have road closures, bus reinforcements, and barriers on the road to Alter do Chão
A special traffic scheme will be implemented in Santarém for Carnival 2026 to ensure safety and fluidity during the celebrations.
The Municipal Secretary of Mobility and Traffic in Santarém, Pará, has announced a special traffic plan for the upcoming Carnival 2026 festivities, ensuring safety and smooth transit for locals and visitors. The operation is set to commence on Saturday, February 14, 2026, and will continue until Tuesday, February 17, featuring simultaneous programming at several locations including Praça Tiradentes, the waterfront, the Cristoval circuit, and in neighborhoods and the district of Alter do Chão.
As part of this plan, parts of Avenida Tapajós will be closed to traffic due to the setup for the main urban carnival event. Unlike last year, where only half of the road was closed, the entire avenue will be blocked this time due to the expanded infrastructure for the event, and the closure is expected to last until Ash Wednesday. Additionally, surrounding streets near Praça Tiradentes will be closed during nighttime events, and physical barriers will be used to control vehicle access to the area where the carnival activities will concentrate.
The city's initiative reflects an effort to manage the influx of visitors expected for the celebrations, enhancing safety and accessibility for participants. By implementing these measures, local authorities aim to improve the overall experience of Carnival in Santarém while ensuring the safety of the public as large crowds gather for the festivities in various locations throughout the city.
