Ghana police bust prostitution ring, arrest 12 Nigerians, others
Ghanaian police have arrested 13 individuals, including 12 Nigerians, in connection with a prostitution and human trafficking operation in Koforidua.
The New Juaben South Municipal Police Command in Koforidua, Ghana, recently conducted a special operation leading to the arrest of 13 suspected commercial sex workers, including 12 Nigerians and one Ghanaian. This police action was part of a broader initiative to combat prostitution and human trafficking in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The operation stemmed from a complaint submitted by a Nigerian national who reported being trafficked for sex work.
The complaint was filed by Stella Godwill, a 30-year-old Nigerian woman, who alleged that she was brought to Ghana under the pretense of employment but was instead forced into prostitution by a woman named Christabel Simon Monday. During her ordeal, she claimed she was pressured to meet a daily earnings target of 400 Ghana cedis, indicating the exploitative nature of the trafficking situation. The police's swift response was prompted by her allegations and further investigation into the local sex trade.
In addition to the arrest of the suspected sex workers, authorities apprehended two other individuals linked to the operation: a landlord who provided shelter to the workers and a bouncer with connections to the prostitution ring. These arrests highlight the collaborative efforts of law enforcement to dismantle human trafficking networks and underscore the ongoing challenges of addressing illegal sex work in Ghana.
