More flights in January – Avinor points to winter tourism

Avinor reports an increase in passenger numbers at Norwegian airports, driven by a rise in international travel related to winter tourism.

In January, Avinor reported that 3.6 million passengers traveled through its airports, representing a 3% increase from the same month last year. The rise in overall travelers has been significantly influenced by those traveling internationally, with the northern airports in Norway showing the most substantial growth. Avinor's Director of Traffic Development, Gaute Skallerud Riise, highlighted that Norway is becoming an increasingly popular winter destination.

International travelers constituted 1.4 million of these passengers, marking a 6% increase compared to January of the previous year. This uptick in travel can be attributed largely to the appeal of winter activities and tourism experiences in Norway, which are gaining traction among both domestic and international visitors. The growth in passenger numbers reflects not only a rebound from previous years affected by the pandemic but also a sustained interest in Norway's winter offerings.

The results suggest a promising outlook for the tourism sector as it continues to recover. With airports in northern Norway leading the charge, there is potential for further growth in winter tourism as more travelers look to enjoy the snowy landscapes and recreational activities the region has to offer. Avinor’s data could encourage additional investment and marketing efforts to capitalize on this upward trend in travel numbers, ensuring the sector Keeps up the momentum into the peak winter months ahead.
