More flights in January – Avinor points to winter tourism
Norway saw a 3% increase in flights in January 2023 compared to the previous year, largely attributed to rising international winter tourism.
In January 2023, Avinor reported that the number of flights at their airports increased by 3% compared to the same month last year, reflecting a surge in winter tourism. A total of 3.6 million passengers traveled through Avinor's airports, with international travelers accounting for a significant share of this rise. Director of Traffic Development, Gaute Skallerud Riise, indicated that the growth in international visitors was particularly notable from Norway's northern airports, which have positioned themselves as key players in the winter tourism market.
This increase in passenger numbers was emphasized by the fact that 1.4 million of the travelers were international, marking a 6% rise from January of the previous year. Skallerud Riise noted the shift in various regions of Norway, as more areas begin to establish themselves more strongly in the international winter tourism market. This trend is expected to continue as Norwegian destinations capitalize on the growing interest in winter sports and activities.
Additionally, the total number of flight movements rose to 47,778, reflecting a 1% increase from the previous year. This overall growth in air travel not only signifies a recovering tourism sector but also highlights Norway's potential as a prime winter destination, attracting visitors from abroad who are looking for winter sports, scenic locations, and unique travel experiences.
