Lagos announces traffic diversion for 2026 city marathon
The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan for the upcoming 2026 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon to facilitate smooth conduct of the event.
The Lagos State Government has rolled out a detailed traffic diversion plan in anticipation of the 2026 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon set for February 14, 2026. This initiative aims to manage road use effectively during the marathon, enhancing safety and minimizing disruptions for local commuters. The traffic modifications will impact specific roads along the race routes, ensuring that both runners and spectators can participate in the event unhindered.
The marathon will include two main races: a 42-kilometer race and a 10-kilometer race, both scheduled to unfold simultaneously. According to information from the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the longer race will start from Ahmadu Bello, passing through the Coastal Road, which will serve as the finish line. Meanwhile, the 10-kilometer race will intensively traverse areas in Lekki Phase 1, culminating at the Sanusi Fafunwa area.
These traffic regulations are aimed at ensuring a seamless marathon experience, which is expected to draw both local and international participation. Such events not only promote athleticism but also highlight the challenges of city infrastructure, prompting discussions on urban development and public transport enhancements needed in Lagos.
