In a potentially tragic incident on the national road to Thessaloniki, a 62-year-old man drove under the influence of alcohol in the opposite lane for a significant distance of 25 kilometers. Just before the Almyros junction, the driver's vehicle collided sideways with an oncoming truck. Fortunately, the truck driver managed to skillfully overtake the errant vehicle, preventing a possible head-on collision that could have had serious consequences.
No injuries were reported due to this close call, attributed to a combination of luck and the calm response of the truck driver. The incident highlights the severe risks associated with drunk driving and the potential for catastrophic accidents when drivers operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
The 62-year-old was subsequently brought before the courts and found guilty of dangerous driving while intoxicated, receiving a sentence of 14 months in prison. The court allowed him to convert his sentence into a fine of 10 euros per day and recognized his sincere remorse as a mitigating factor. During his testimony, he expressed regret and claimed that he had become confused about the road, illustrating the potential for serious repercussions stemming from impaired driving.
