Compensation for the trapped passengers on the Odontotos
There was significant distress recorded for 77 passengers trapped for over three hours on the Odontotos railway due to train failure, and they are entitled to a full refund of their tickets as announced by Hellenic Train.
Recently, the Odontotos railway in Greece experienced a distressing incident where 77 passengers were trapped for over three hours due to a train malfunction. The evacuation of the passengers was successfully carried out with the help of the Greek Emergency Response Team (EMAK), allowing them to return safely to Diakopto. In response to the situation, Hellenic Train issued an announcement stating that they would be providing a full refund, amounting to 100% of the ticket costs for the affected travelers.
The compensation structure for passengers impacted by such delays or cancellations has been established through a new agreement between Hellenic Train and the Greek Ministry of Transport. This agreement stipulates that for cases like the Odontotos incident, where delays exceed two hours or trips are canceled entirely, passengers are entitled to a full refund. Additionally, the agreement ensures that costs incurred for EMAK's services will also be reimbursed if their assistance is required.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the Odontotos railway, which is a popular tourist route in Greece, particularly in the Kalavryta area. While the immediate issue has been addressed with the promise of compensation, it raises questions about the reliability and operational readiness of the rail service, and the measures in place to prevent such occurrences in the future, which is crucial for maintaining public confidence in this transportation option.
