Nigeria’s sacrifice brought stability to Liberia, says COAS
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu highlighted Nigeria's crucial role in stabilizing Liberia during its civil war during a speech in Monrovia.
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, recently affirmed the significant contribution of Nigerian troops to the stabilization of Liberia following its civil war. Speaking at the 69th Armed Forces Day Anniversary of the Armed Forces of Liberia in Monrovia, Shaibu noted that Nigerian forces not only played a pivotal role in peace enforcement efforts but also carried the heaviest operational burden in the conflict. He emphasized that Liberia's current stability is a direct result of the sacrifices made by the Nigerian Army, along with the collaborative efforts of the governments in the region.
Shaibu further elaborated that Nigeria's involvement in Liberia was not a random act but was driven by a deliberate foreign and defense policy aimed at fostering stability in West Africa. This intervention, which took place under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Monitoring Group, demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to regional peace and its readiness to support fellow African nations in restoring order during times of crisis. He expressed that the collaborative spirit and solidarity among African nations play a crucial role in ensuring lasting peace.
The remarks come at a time of reflection on the past efforts of the Nigerian military and their substantial impact on the regional dynamics of West Africa. The acknowledgment of Nigeria's sacrifices not only underscores the country’s role in promoting peace but also serves as a reminder of the importance of continued cooperation among African nations to address challenges that threaten stability in the region.
