Group hails army chief over officers’ welfare, security reforms

A Nigerian civil society group praises Army Chief Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu for significant reforms in welfare, training, and security during his first 90 days in office.

The Nigeria Integrity Watch, a Civil Society Organisation, has praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for making substantial strides in the Nigerian Army within his initial 90 days in office. The organization highlighted the enhancements in officers’ welfare, training programs, and overall security architecture, indicating that these changes represent a pivotal shift in Nigeria’s military strategy, particularly amidst escalating security challenges in the region.

In their statement released by spokesperson Dr. John Nang, the organization emphasized that the reforms took place promptly after Lt.-Gen. Shaibu assumed office on October 24, 2025. The new chief has introduced a range of initiatives, including the commissioning of new housing estates for soldiers, the induction of 6,830 new recruits, and the promotion of 105 senior officers. These efforts are seen as part of an ambitious institutional reform initiative aimed at not only improving the welfare of military personnel but also enhancing the operational effectiveness of the army.

The commendation from Nigeria Integrity Watch reflects a growing optimism about the military's evolving role in addressing Nigeria's security concerns. The focus on welfare, international cooperation, and restructuring training programs is viewed as crucial elements in building a more resilient and capable military force. The positive impact of these reforms may potentially provide a foundation for better security and stability in a country facing complex challenges such as terrorism and regional conflicts.
