Almens Dominates at the Olympic Mountain, Latvian Opmanis Makes Top Forty Again

Swiss skier Fon Almens won the super-G at the Olympic Games, while Latvian Elvis Opmanis finished in the top forty for the second consecutive time.

Fon Almens made history by winning the super-G event at the Olympic Games, solidifying his status as the first Swiss alpine skier to achieve victory in this discipline. He clocked in at 1:25.32, narrowly beating American Ryan Cochran-Siegle by just 0.13 seconds and fellow Swiss teammate Marco Odermatt by 0.28 seconds. This victory adds to his earlier successes in downhill and team combination events at the games, showcasing his exceptional prowess on the slopes.

Latvian skier Elvis Opmanis also competed in the super-G, completing the course in 1:32.05, which placed him 6.73 seconds behind the winner. Though he faced challenges and did not reach the competitive speeds of the top finishers, Opmanis managed to surpass seven other competitors, with five of them failing to finish the race. This marks Opmanis's second consecutive appearance in the top forty at the Olympics, recognizing his growth and potential in the sport despite the fierce competition.

The race was marked by notable incidents, including a crash by home skier Dominik Paris, who had previously earned a bronze medal in downhill and failed to finish the super-G after a gate error. Other athletes, such as American Rivers Radamus, Frenchman Nils Allegre, Canadian Ryley Seger, and Marco Fifner from Liechtenstein also faced difficulties, underscoring the challenging nature of this Olympic event. Almens's victory also breaks the streak of Austrian skier Matthias Mayer, who had won the super-G in the past two Olympic Games, signifying a shift in the competitive landscape of alpine skiing at the Olympics.
