Carnival 2026: banks closed on Monday and Tuesday; see when service resumes
Brazilian banks will be closed for in-person services during Carnival from February 16 to 17, 2026, but online transactions will remain available.
The Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) has announced changes in banking hours for Carnival 2026. Banks will be closed for in-person service on February 16 and 17, meaning customers will be unable to conduct transactions, including transfers and bill payments, at bank branches. However, the digital payment system PIX will remain operational, allowing online transactions to continue without interruption.
On Ash Wednesday, February 18, bank branches will reopen at noon, Brasília time, but branches that typically close before 3 PM will open earlier to ensure that customers receive at least three hours of in-person service. Febraban emphasizes the importance of utilizing digital banking channels during the days when physical branches are closed, encouraging customers to use bank apps and online services for their banking needs.
This decision reflects the ongoing trend in Brazil towards enhancing digital banking services while providing customers with the necessary information to manage their banking activities during holiday periods. With the growing reliance on technology for financial transactions, institutions stress the security and efficiency of their online platforms, particularly during festive seasons when traditional banking hours may be disrupted.
