Man posing as religious leader arrested on suspicion of raping women in rituals in SP

A man pretending to be a spiritual leader was arrested in São Paulo for allegedly raping women under the guise of spiritual cleansing rituals.

Edson da Cruz, a 46-year-old man wanted by the authorities for suspicion of rape, was arrested in Guarujá, São Paulo, on Monday, October 9. He is accused of luring women by pretending to be a spiritual leader and has been linked to at least four identified victims so far. The arrest warrant, issued by the justice system in Santos, followed a joint operation by the local police departments, including the Delegacia Sede and the Delegacia da Mulher, focusing on sexual crimes.

According to police investigations, Cruz presented himself as an African religious leader to gain the victims' trust, often targeting women who were experiencing health or psychological issues. He promised to heal them through 'spiritual cleansings', which he apparently used as a cover for his abusive actions. The police were able to locate him on Rua Manoel Penelas in the Vila Santa Rosa neighborhood, where he was arrested and taken to the Guarujá Police Station, before being moved to a public jail, where he remains at the disposal of the Justice.

This case has raised significant concerns about the vulnerability of individuals seeking spiritual guidance and the potential for abuse in such situations. With the investigation ongoing, law enforcement officials are working to uncover the extent of Cruz's activities and whether more victims have yet to come forward. Such incidents highlight the importance of awareness and protective measures around individuals in crisis who may be susceptible to manipulation by false spiritual leaders or healers.
