Police arrest former president of spiritual center convicted of sexual abuse of followers
A former president of a spiritual center in Brazil has been arrested after being convicted of sexual abuse against his followers.
Marcelo Antônio Marques Prazeres, the former president of the Centro Espiritualista Semeadores da Luz (CESL) located in Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro, was arrested by the Civil Police on Wednesday, after being on the run following his conviction for sexual abuse involving fraud. In 2023, he was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for perpetrating numerous sexual violations between 2009 and 2016, using his position in the spiritual community to manipulate and abuse his followers.
The crimes were reported to the Public Ministry in 2018, which prompted an investigation that uncovered over 100 instances of abuse. Prazeres exploited the trust of his victims during spiritual consultations where he allegedly channeled entities. His actions involved deceitful tactics where victims were led to believe they were being prepared for spiritual initiation, leaving them vulnerable to his predatory behavior. This case shines a light on the potential dangers within spiritual organizations where authority figures can exploit their influence.
The Centro Espiritualista Semeadores da Luz combines elements from various religious traditions including Umbanda, Candomblé, and Gnostic Christianity, promoting a philosophy of universalism. This incident raises concerns about the safety and protection of followers within such spiritual institutions, emphasizing the need for greater accountability and monitoring of religious leaders to prevent abuses of power.
