State Fire and Rescue Service: Last year almost half of the calls to the 112 emergency phone were not emergencies
Latvia's State Fire and Rescue Service reports that nearly half of all calls to the 112 emergency number in 2025 were not actual emergencies, causing delays in real emergency responses.
On February 11, Latvia and Europe mark the day of the unified emergency contact number 112, as emphasized by the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD). The VUGD reminds citizens that 112 should only be dialed in life-threatening situations or emergencies concerning health, environment, or property. The ongoing public campaign has improved recognition of the number; however, data indicates a significant portion of calls are made in non-emergency situations that hinder timely assistance for those in genuine need.
Over the past two years, Latvia has received approximately 1.2 million 112 calls annually, with a notable increase in non-emergency calls. In 2024, 27% of calls made to the emergency line were unrelated to urgent matters, increasing to nearly halfโ43%โin 2025. These findings underscore the lack of appropriate use of the emergency number, potentially leading to disastrous delays in help for actual emergencies.
Despite advancements in public awareness, with 93% of respondents correctly identifying 112 as the emergency number in 2025, the rising percentage of non-emergency calls poses a challenge for emergency services. This situation calls for further public education campaigns to ensure that 112 is used appropriately, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response in Latvia and ensuring that those in urgent need receive help promptly.
