R. Kaukėnas returns to basketball – he will lead a new club aiming to enter the 'NBA Europe'
R. Kaukėnas, a former Lithuanian national basketball player, is set to lead a new basketball club in Rome that aims to reach the 'NBA Europe' league.
R. Kaukėnas, who previously held the president's position at Vilnius Wolves, is teaming up with a group trying to revive basketball in Rome. This initiative is overseen by Donnie Nelson, a former basketball operations head for the Dallas Mavericks, who previously worked as an assistant for the Lithuanian national team over 20 years ago. R. Kaukėnas has been identified as Nelson's close contact in Italy and is a central figure in this project. The plan involves Kaukėnas taking on roles similar to those he held at the now-defunct club in the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL). The new club intends to acquire the rights of the struggling Cremona team and compete in Italy's top leagues. Early steps toward this goal were reportedly taken back in October, and recent weeks have seen a flurry of meetings and discussions among the stakeholders. However, the project faces delays due to the need for renovations to the main tennis stadium’s roof, with expectations for completion by the second to third quarter of 2027. This timeline indicates the challenges ahead for the new basketball venture, as infrastructure updates are essential for hosting games and events crucial for building support and securing a successful foundation for the club's aspirations.
