In Vilkaviškis district, a chimney caught fire: a disabled man was carried out from the smoke-filled house

A disabled man was rescued from a smoke-filled house after a chimney fire in Vilkaviškis district.

On February 10 at around 4:51 PM, reports came in about a chimney fire on Vienybės Street. Firefighters were informed that a disabled man was inside a single-story wooden house that was heavily filled with smoke. During the emergency call, the reporting person was coughing heavily, indicating possible smoke poisoning. When firefighters arrived, they found the interior of the home severely smoke-logged, with burning furniture including a sofa, armchairs, mattresses, and blankets in the living room and kitchen. The rescue efforts were focused on evacuating the people inside. By 4:57 PM, a 62-year-old man who was conscious but suffering from smoke inhalation was carried out of the house and handed over to medical personnel. A 28-year-old man who also suffered from smoke inhalation was able to exit the home on his own and was also transported for medical care. The fire was reportedly caused by possible violations of stove or chimney installation and operation regulations. The wooden house measured 9 by 8 meters, and its roof was covered with slate, with the flames damaging furniture and items in the living areas and causing smoke damage to walls. Notably, it was reported that there was no smoke detector present in the home, raising concerns about safety standards.
